The Marble Lion pendant by Macabre Gadgets is a handcrafted lion shield pendant — a white bonded marble cameo of a lion holding a snake, set into a round sterling silver or gold-plated shield with Roman pyramid studs, on a 60 cm chain. The reverse carries the Macabre Gadgets maker’s mark — a hallmark in the tradition of ancient craftsmen.
Designed with a strong, sculptural presence, the pendant naturally aligns with the tradition of men’s lion necklaces while remaining fully unisex in wear.
The round shield is one of the oldest forms in classical antiquity. The Greek Aspis and the Roman Clipeus were both round — and the Clipeus Virtutis, the “shield of virtue,” was a specific Roman honorary form: a round shield awarded as a mark of valor and authority, hung in public spaces and worn as a declaration of rank. The pyramid studs that frame the setting are drawn from Roman decorative metalwork: precise, repeated, architectural. The lion and snake cameo at the centre is one of the oldest heraldic pairings in Western art — appearing on ancient shields, coins, and temple friezes across the Mediterranean. Strength against cunning.
The lion’s authority in classical art begins with Hercules. The Nemean Lion — an invulnerable beast that terrorised the region of Nemea — was the first of his twelve labours. Hercules killed it with his bare hands and wore its pelt as armour for the rest of his life. From that moment, the lion became the symbol of proven, controlled force — power that has already overcome its opposite.
The cameo is hand-carved in white bonded marble — the same material and technique as the Marble Lion ring. Set into the round shield, the contrast between the raw stone face and the precision of the metal setting gives the piece its tension: something ancient held in something exact.
Available in sterling silver — cool, contemporary, precise — or 24K gold-plated sterling silver, which gives the shield the warmth and weight of Roman imperial metalwork.
Each pendant is individually handcrafted. Natural variations in the marble mean no two cameos share the exact same surface pattern or texture.
